Liverpool
That famous city in the North West of England, Liverpool has given us so many great things over the years, perhaps the most famous of which are The Beatles. In fact music plays a large part in the area's cultural heritage and as a result, many famous bands have emerged from the Merseyside city including the likes of Echo and the Bunnymen, The Wombats and The Zutons amongst many others.
Liverpool has been a city since 1880 after building up much of its legacy through its port, which saw 40% of the world's trade pass through it at its height. Before that it had been recognised as a borough as far back as 1207. It is currently part of Merseyside but historically it was part of the county of Lancashire, before the boundaries of that county were re-established in 1972 and Liverpool along with many other places were re-distributed.
During 2008, Liverpool was the European Capital of Culture, during which many culturally significant events took place including rock concerts and art shows. Tourism is a huge part of the city's life and people from all over the world flock to it, both because of its rich history and because of its recent successes.
Liverpool is home to 2 premier league football clubs - Liverpool FC and Everton FC.
