Cash & All Major Credit CardsAn absolute classic in Liverpool circles, Maggie Mays is pretty much the only place left in Liverpool city centre where you can get plenty of change from a tenner with a full English. It is like stepping back in time, with that local flavour that is sadly missing from many of the homogenous, sanitised city centre establishments, and we’re glad that it is still here!
The Vibe
You can still imagine what it was like when you could smoke indoors at Maggie Mays. And I don’t mean that in a bad way. It is simple and fast service, from local people in a setting that could be taken from any era over the past 50 years. You see the same contractors coming in for a morning brekkie or a cup of tea, and the same old fellas stopping by on their way to the bookies, as you would have done ten years ago, or twenty years ago. Change isn’t always a positive thing, and we love that Maggie Mays has remained its brash, scouse self over the years. You’ll get a warm welcome and a big plate of food, no matter who you are or where you come from. Maggie Mays is a home away from home, that little bit of familiar that we all like from time to time.
The Food
Simple, English (and scouse) café food at its best. Maggie Mays is famous for its big English breakfast dishes – with meat, vegetarian, and vegan dishes on offer, and loads of extras that you can add to your dish. It is an amazing fry up no matter which way you look at it. The other thing that people flock to Maggie Mays for is the Scouse. Expect a big, heart bowl of Scouse, with a side of crusty bread and butter, and beetroot or red cabbage.
Other mains on the menu include lasagne, steak, fried scampi, chicken curry, sausage and chips, pies, fish and chips, soup and some salads. A fine selection of local café staples and classics.
The Price
I challenge you to find any other café, anywhere near the city centre that can offer you a good, heart, Full English breakfast for under £6. It can’t be done, and it’s not like Maggie Mays is serving up slop. Pretty much everything else on the menu is priced between a fiver and £8, apart from the Aberdeen Angus sirloin steak, which is still an incredibly low price of £12. You could feed your family in Maggie Mays for the same amount of money it costs to buy a single pot of tea in some of the other establishments on Bold Street and across town.
